Almost 20 years’ experience in the attractions industry puts Colin Dawson, chief executive of the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions (BALPPA), in a prime position to assess the health of British tourism.

“The industry is in good shape in as far as it has proved itself to be successful,” he says. “But we’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do if we’re to meet the Government’s target of increasing the annual £86 billion income from tourism to £100 billion by 2010.”

World's First Sports College Indoor Rowing Championship at LIW 2007

LIW 2007 is staging the world’s first Sports College Indoor Rowing Championship in which up to 200 students are expected to compete. 

All sports colleges in Birmingham, including two special schools, have been invited to send Year 8 students – four boys and four girls - to take part in the Championship, a specially-designed competition of relay events lasting eight minutes each.
